Luckily, the acid hadn't scrambled Max's sense of direction, nor his need for some rudimentary hygiene. When we got to his place, he was already having a shower. His soiled clothes were bagged and hidden too, which was for the best. They would probably need to be incinerated for public safety.

I found Ariadne some wine, and settled Nick in a comfy chair that looked out towards the cityscape. It was dark and the lights had come on, but this did something to Nick's equilibrium. He got quite agitated, and climbed on top of the chair, slapping the arm rests with his open hands, and shouting.

"Aayiii, aayiii!"

Ariadne's eyes got big at this, and she said, "What did these guys take?"

"Acid."

"What are they, hippies?"

Meanwhile Max came out of his bedroom, dressed in some running shorts and a singlet. His green eyes looked scary, the pupils tiny despite the duskiness of the room. Nick calmed down again, and Max poured himself a scotch. He sat down, and immediately said, "Holy shit. Look at the fucking cactus!"

"What about the cactus?" I asked.

"I mean, look at it. How can you miss it?"

Nick sensed Max's fascination, and he started staring at it too. Suddenly, it was like they weren't there, and Ariadne and I started talking.

"Do they do this often?"

"Hardly ever. Nick especially. I have to say, I'm really surprised. Tundra is a freak. He probably does this more than he should, but I'm not usually with him when he does, so I couldn't tell you how frequently."

"It's nice that you look out for your friends."

"Ah, I'll tease them mercilessly tomorrow. And for the foreseeable future."

"Yeah, but you know." She slid closer to me on the couch.

"So was that Ted Shute's daughter?"

"Yeah. Weird girl eh?"

"I couldn't tell from just meeting her. What's weird about her?"

"Everything. Her father is a total shit, for starters. Her mother died years ago and her step-mom..." She tailed off into silence.

"What?"

"Oh, I don't even want to go there."

"Why?"

"Because her step-mom is my older sister. I mean, Phaedra's old enough to be my mom for Godsake. She's so unhappy. And Hippolyta is too, I know that. They're both shooting up, you know."

"What?"

"It's sick. Heroin. They do heroin together. I'm really worried about both of them."

"You're right. That does strike me as marginally un-healthy. Is it something that Hippolyta wants to be doing, or is this some 21st-century twist on the evil step-mom routine?"

"She doesn't talk about it much with me. Not that I really want to. But I think she does it to piss Shute off more than anything else."

"I can see that. So what's Shute doing to you?"

I'd hit her soft spot with a laser-like intensity and accuracy. I wouldn't have blamed her if she hated me like that street-kid Blossom did. People don't like to be helped, and they hate it even more when you can see they need to be helped. But Ariadne was different. She was better than that, and she put her head into my shoulder and started crying almost soundlessly.
